The 10 Questions You Must Ask When Touring an Assisted Living Community in Las Vegas
June 2, 2025 · 6 min read
A polished lobby and a friendly tour guide tell you almost nothing about what daily life will actually be like for your loved one. The communities that look best on a first walkthrough are not always the ones that deliver the best care. Before you tour any assisted living community in Las Vegas or Henderson, it helps to know exactly what to ask, because the answers reveal far more than the décor ever will.
1. What is your staff-to-resident ratio, by shift?
Ask for the actual ratio during the day, evening, and overnight shifts, not just a general number. Overnight staffing is often the thinnest, and it is also when falls and medical emergencies are hardest to respond to quickly. A community that hesitates to answer this clearly is worth a second look.
2. How do you handle a resident's changing care needs over time?
Care needs rarely stay static. Ask whether the community can adjust the care plan and staffing in place, or whether a resident would need to move to a different community as needs increase. Some communities offer multiple levels of care on one campus, which can spare your family a second difficult transition later.
3. What is included in the base monthly fee, and what costs extra?
Many communities use a tiered pricing model where medication management, mobility assistance, or incontinence care are billed as add-ons. Ask for a full breakdown in writing, not just a verbal estimate, so you can compare communities on equal footing.
4. Can I see the most recent state inspection report?
In Nevada, assisted living communities are licensed and inspected by the Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance. Reputable communities will share their most recent survey results without hesitation. If a community is reluctant to show you this, treat that as a signal.
5. What does a typical day look like for a resident?
Ask for an actual daily schedule, not a brochure description. Find out how often residents leave their rooms, what activities are offered, and whether participation is encouraged or just available. Isolation in a private room is still isolation, even inside a nice building.
6. How do you handle medical emergencies?
Ask which hospital the community partners with, how quickly staff typically respond to a fall or medical event, and whether there is a nurse on-site or on call at all hours. In Las Vegas, proximity to facilities like Sunrise Hospital, Henderson Hospital, or St. Rose Dominican can matter for response times.
7. What is your staff turnover rate?
High turnover often means inconsistent care and a workforce that does not know your loved one well. While communities may not share an exact percentage, ask how long key caregivers have been with the community. Long-tenured staff are usually a good sign.
8. How do you support residents with mild cognitive changes who are not yet in memory care?
Many assisted living residents have some degree of memory impairment without a formal dementia diagnosis. Ask how staff are trained to support these residents and at what point the community would recommend a move to memory care.
9. What does the move-in and move-out process look like?
Ask about the notice period, refund policy for move-out, and what happens to a resident's care plan and belongings if they need to leave quickly, whether due to a hospital stay or a change in needs. Understanding this now avoids confusion during an already stressful moment later.
10. Can I talk to current residents' families?
A confident community will offer to connect you with current families, not just curated testimonials. Honest, unscripted feedback from someone already living the experience is often the most valuable information you will get on the entire tour.

Should I tour more than one assisted living community before deciding?
Yes. Touring at least two or three communities gives you a basis for comparison on cost, staffing, culture, and care philosophy. Most families find the right fit becomes much clearer after seeing a few options side by side.
Is it okay to do an unannounced second visit?
Many communities welcome this, and it can reveal a more accurate picture of daily operations than a scheduled tour. If a community discourages unannounced visits, that is worth noting.
